A Typical Day in the Bookstore

There is nothing quite like actually going into a bookstore — especially if you have a little luxurious time on your hands and no particular task to accomplish. The first section you’ll come across is the new releases — stacked on tables and faced out on bookshelves. This is the perfect place to wander slowly. Go ahead and judge a few books by their covers. Read some the book flaps to decide which titles have to be added to the future stack of “must reads” on your nightstand.

Next, keep going into the store, past the displays and stacks of tempting new releases, to your favorite section — you know where it is. Maybe you love cookbooks with their inspirational photos, or memoirs, because getting into someone else’s head can be a journey or possibly you can’t read enough mysteries because you almost always figure it out right before the end. It feels indulgent and exciting to walk the aisle at a snail’s pace, pulling the books that catch your interest and paging through. In your favorite section, you likely keep a short list in your head of what you will buy when you get a chance. It’s hard to pick but in the best way — an embarrassment of riches.

Once you’ve decided which title has to be read right away, you can buy the book you just had to have this time and take it to the coffee shop right there in the store. A coffee shop inside a bookstore is probably one of the more wonderful things to have happened to people who love books. There’s almost nothing better than drinking coffee or tea within the pleasant din and hum of commerce and conversation and opening new book, full of all the drama, mayhem, history, crime or romance — full of all the promise of a book you’ve yet to read.

Before you go, you can check out the kid’s section with its own tables of colorful new releases and display of seasonal or holiday books. You can rediscover a classic book from your own childhood — because truly good children’s books have a particular way of living in the adult mind forever. The kids in your life probably have their own running list of books they really want to take home — whether they’re still reading cardboard books, picture books featuring their favorite characters or the newest graphic novel or chapter book. If you bring home a book, you’ll be a bit of a hero and you might get to read it to a kid in your life.

Book News: What’s Coming Out in November and December

Every month, bookstores are chomping at the bit to be the first to announce news of brand new books to hit the shelves. Regardless if it’s the next page-turner in a series or the beginning of a new franchise, book retailers and lovers alike are always excited to see new promotional posters in the windows or alerts on their phones.

Like a previous blog I had published a few months ago, this blog will put the spotlight on new books that will be released in November and December 2017 – particularly the type of books that are targeted toward the mass and have good chance of hitting some best seller lists.  I love to find more unknown authors, but I have respect for these big name authors and I think it’s always interesting to see what people are reading and find interesting.

Best Selling author David Baldacci is back with “End Game,” a fast paced thriller that will be released on November 14. Will Robie and Jessica Reel are always called upon by the U.S. government because they’re lethal badasses, and they can always be counted on to solve the case. But when their good friend and colleague Blue Man goes missing, Will and Jessica play detectives to figure out where he is. I’m trying out the first book of Baldacci’s that introduces these two – I used to read a lot of spy thriller genre.

Also to be released on November 14, Author Janet Ivanovich returns with “Hard Core Twenty Four.” Featuring brain-eating zombies and headless bodies, bounty hunter Stephanie Plum in stuck in the middle trying to solve a murder and find answers for dozens of unsolved questions around town.  Zombies sure are retaining their popularity.

Other November big releases include:

  • “Past Perfect” by Danielle Steele
  • “The Whispering Room” by Dean Koontz
  • “Xanathar’s Guide to Everything” by Wizards RPG Team

The book news for December look to be even more exciting, so get ready to put some on your holiday wish list and gift list. The books will include a new release by popular author Nora Roberts, titled “Year One.” It’s New Year’s Eve in New York, and a mysterious illness sweeps through the city. Within weeks, half the population is decimated, the world begins to power down, and magic — both good and evil — is in the air. The book is set for release on December 5.   I’m seeing a bit of an apocalyptic theme these days…..

If you’re active on Goodreads, then you’ll notice that Brave (A Wicked Saga #3) is the top-rated book everyone is waiting on in December. Ivy Morgan being held captive by a prince who’s trying to open the gates to the Otherworld. While she’d held against her will, she feels something dark and insidious is growing within her, and it’s coming between her and the man she’s in love with. Young Adult books – they have a formula, but hey, people love them!

Other December releases include:

  • “Love, Life, and the List” by Kasie West
  • “Roomies” by Kristina Lauren
  • “Foolish Hearts” by Emma Mills

Keep an eye out for more new releases!
